Facebook And Child Safety

What Is The Problem?
Kids are giving away too much information that can be easily traced to their home address or school. Students will take a picture with their cell phone and post online. Now, the predator knows where the child lives and what they look like. In some cases, that is all they need to make contact.

Who Is Most At Risk?
The kids that tell their online friend that they hate their parents, drink, smoke, use drugs or have had sex are the easier targets. These kids are less likely to talk to their parents. Latch key kids are also more vulnerable because they would be home alone if a predator took the chance to go directly to their house. Predators can track a parent’s cell phone through global positioning and know if a parent is at home, near or far away. If they have the phone number, they can learn this information. Of course, the child had no idea of the danger in giving out the parent’s cell number. Girls who lie about being older than they are also making themselves vulnerable.

The Dangers Are Real.
Children feel safe in their homes and think nothing can happen. Middle school and high school students need to be closely monitored. This age group can not imagine anything bad happening to them. There is software available now that can assist parents in protecting their children..

Social Networking Dangers

June 15, 2010 | Leave a Comment

What makes the social-networking sites more dangerous than regular Web pages?
It’s one-stop shopping. You have the profile and instant messaging right there. These networking sites are a perfect predator’s playground. Predators don’t have to go to chat rooms, they can troll through and look for pretty faces that they like and get all the information they want. The police we work with tell us that when a predator starts grooming a child, he looks for vulnerability, and with a diary or blog right there, he’s already gotten past the first stage.

Is there any way to know how big a problem this is?
No, because the kids aren’t telling. Sometimes they don’t even tell mom and dad that they have a space [online]. Maybe they’re underage, and if they tell, guess what mom and dad will do? Take away the page. We’ve done surveys of kids ages 12-15 and asked them if they had ever been sexually harassed online, and most of them said they had been, but they never tell their parents. [According to Highlights of the Youth Internet Safety Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, "One in five children, 10 to 17 years old, receive unwanted sexual solicitations online."]

A mother whose 14-year-old daughter disappeared last month told a local paper recently that she had no idea that her daughter had a MySpace profile and that it was full of risqué language. Is that common?
Most parents don’t know anything about MySpace or the other sites, and if they do, they think it’s harmless. The truth of the matter is that a lot of parents are intimidated by their kids because their kids are so much more tech-savvy than they are. And they’re busy and they don’t have time to learn about this, so they say, “OK, if you’re having fun, go ahead.”

Internet Abuse At Work

June 15, 2010 | Leave a Comment

The high unemployment rate — 10.2 percent for October 2009 in the United States — hasn’t deterred workers from goofing off on the job. Data from Websense Inc. indicates that Internet misuse costs American corporations more than $85 billion annually in lost productivity — an increase of 35 percent since the year prior.

“Employee Internet misuse is a critical business issue for corporations. While the Web has long been hailed as a productivity tool, this misuse in some cases offsets the productivity benefits of Internet access,” said Andy Meyer, vice president of marketing for Websense Inc.

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that weekly work hours decreased slightly in 2007 to 34.2 from 2008′s 34.5. However, many employees are extending their workdays from home by accessing e-mail and following up on projects remotely. IDC expects the number of “day extenders” to reach 31 percent by 2008 and the overlap between work time and home time could result in even higher incidences of Internet abuse in the office.

Websense found that 67 percent of workers access news sites for personal reasons, and 37 percent access shopping and auction sites at the office. In addition, 2 percent of employees admit accessing pornography and 2 percent admit gambling online at work.

A study from The Society of Financial Service Professionals on technology and ethics in the workplace revealed that 65 percent had committed at least one act of Internet abuse in the form of shopping (41 percent); using company e-mail for personal reasons (39 percent); playing computer games (34 percent); job searching (17 percent); and copying software for personal use (9 percent).

Is A Cyber Affair Cheating?

June 15, 2010 | Leave a Comment

Cyber affairs are the ‘flavor of the day’ when it comes to infidelity and extramarital affairs. The internet now ties with the workplace as the leading place for cheaters of both sexes to find willing partners with whom to have extramarital affairs.  It has removed most of the risks associated with cheating on your mate.

Gone are the days when a would-be-cheater had to physically leave home to seek out someone with whom to have an affair.  Now it can all be done in cyberspace without the risk of running into family members, nosy neighbors, or inquisitive friends and workmates.  With a few clicks of the mouse, a potential cheater has instant access to an endless array of willing partners.  A cyber affair can be easily initiated and conducted from the privacy of your home, with your unsuspecting spouse or significant other in the same room, oblivious to what is going on.

Is a Cyber Affair Cheating?
Cyber affairs are actually a form of emotional infidelity.  Although in the early stages, there’s no sex involved, most emotional infidelity eventually leads to sexual infidelity if left unchecked .  But men and women view cyber affairs very differently.

Most men don’t consider cyber affairs as cheating.  However women view them quite differently.  A survey in Divorce Magazine found that only 46 percent of men considered intense internet relationships to be infidelity, compared to 72 percent of women.

Are Cyber Affairs Serious?
Many people question whether or not cyber affairs should be taken seriously — especially, if there’s no sex involved.  A cyber affair is a VERY serious threat.   A cyber affair should be treated as seriously as a sexual affair, because left unchecked, that’s where it will eventually end up.

In the past 10 years, divorce attorneys have reported seeing an increase in divorces and separations resulting from cyber infidelity.  According to the Fortino Group, one-third of divorce litigation is caused by online affairs.

So don’t make the mistake of underestimating a cyber affair.

Keep Child Predators Away

Christina Long’s life was full of promise. The popular 13-year-old from Connecticut was an honor student and cheerleader. But it seems Christina had a troubling, secretive side. She was meeting strangers over the Internet.

Last May, Christina was strangled to death, and police believe she met her killer online.

Parents have reason for alarm. In a 2008 study, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Justice Department said that one of every five young people ages 10 to 17 surveyed said they had received a sexual solicitation over the Internet in the previous year.

To be sure, shady characters hang out in the virtual playgrounds of cyberspace, just as they do in the physical world. Online predators loiter in chat rooms, dispatch pornographic spam and might try to lure youngsters to in-person meetings.

Employee Internet Abuse

June 15, 2010 | Leave a Comment

Employees who abuse Internet privileges have become a major concern among today’s corporations.  According to a survey of human resource directors, approximately 70% of companies provide Internet access to more than half of their employees and recent statistics show that employee Internet abuse is on the rise.  In a survey of 1439 workers by Vault.com, an online analyst firm, 37% admitted to surfing constantly at work, 32% surfed a few times a day, and 21 % surfed a few times a week (Adschiew, 2008).

In a survey of 224 corporations by Websense, Inc., an electronic monitoring firm, 64% of the companies have disciplined, and more than 30% have terminated, employees for inappropriate use of the Internet (Websense, 2008).  Specifically, accessing pornography (42%), online chatting (13%), gaming (12%), sports (8%), investing (7%), and shopping at work (7%) were the leading causes for disciplinary action or termination.  In an online usage report conducted in 2008 by eMarketer.com, 73 % of U.S. active adult users accessed the Web at least once from work, 41% access the Web a majority of the time at work, and 15% go online exclusively at work (McLaughlin, 2008).

The issue has become critical as organizations attempt to minimize productivity losses that result from such employee Internet abuse, which can represent billions in lost revenue (Stewart, 2008).  Vault.com estimates surfing costs $54 billion annually in lost productivity (Adschiew, 2008).  For instance, in the summer 2008, Victoria’s Secret posted a forty-four minute, mid-work day webcast.  The broadcast had an estimated audience of four million viewers, costing Corporate America as much as $240 million.

Are They Cheating On You?

June 15, 2010 | Leave a Comment

The Internet has opened up a world of opportunities for us all. With a simple click of the mouse, people can get instant gratification, whether they are doing research, shopping for merchandise, or looking for a news item. Unfortunately, the Internet has also made it easier for partners to seek out attention and comfort from others on the web.

Before the Internet, unfaithfulness consisted of phone calls and late night rendezvous’. Now, partners can simply log and find someone to flirt with or pour their heart out to. Sometimes these “cyber affairs” remain restricted to online activity. At other times, they can lead to physical cheating.

Here are some characteristics of cyber affairs and why they are so hurtful to relationships.

Online cheating, or a cyber affair as it’s commonly called, happens when two people who have never met in real life take part in online communication that crosses the line of appropriate behavior.

Generally flirting of any type is a bad idea and can eventually hurt the bond you share with someone else. Divulging private information about your partner or your relationship crosses the line of what’s appropriate. In general, anything that you would normally be discussing with your partner (sex, feelings, worries, etc.) should never be brought up in email, message boards, or chat rooms with someone else.

Online cheating is very similar to emotional affairs. Even if you don’t physically act on feelings you may have for someone else, continuing to engage in flirting or sharing of feelings or emotions via the Internet takes intimacy away from your current relationship.
